668 Final Reflection

1. What resources did I share? When looking over the course of my action research project, I think I shared a number of good resources including websites, books, and research about mentoring, technology integration, and most importantly, change.  I especially enjoyed the philosophy of adaptation assignment, as it allowed me to get back into a lot of good books I've been reading in this area lately.  I also think I shared some helpful tools via the twitter chats.

2. What did I intend to be the impact of my resources on others' learning?  I hoped that others would learn about and add to their own resources some of the new ways of thinking about teaching and learning that I have been getting into lately.  Changing the way we look at teaching in the classroom (and out), and changing the way we think about how kids learn and what they need to learn is a major shift - it's more than just adding on to the way we've always done things.  For me, it means throwing what we've done out, and starting over with a new mindset, and I've found to be a really rejuvenating way to look at the profession.

3. What actual impact could I discern?  Although I didn't get much in the way of comments on my project or presentation, it has re-affirmed for me that my partner Barbra and I are (as always) on the right track and of the same mindset regarding our project. I also thought it was nice that Courtney and a couple of others seemed to appreciate some of the resources I shared - I enjoyed my conversations with them via Twitter and the blogs. Over the course of this class you could really hear the wheels 'a turning!

4. What resources did others share that made a difference to my learning?  SO many! Overall I seemed to interact most with the blogs and work of Barbra, Courtney, Heather, and Andrea - initially because they consistently posted their blogs to Twitter and made it easy for me to find them, but then after awhile because I started to get in sync with their projects, and their thinking about the materials in this course, and it was more like an ongoing conversation. Through our Twitter chats, their blogs, and comments on my blog, I feel like this particular group really offered a lot in terms of advice, resources, and most importantly, questions that made me think about angles I had not considered before. I had some interaction with a few others in the class occasionally, and wish I had more time/opportunity to go through their work as well.

Week 12 Reflection

1. What resources did I share this week? This week I shared the data I've gathered from my mentoring project, as well as some time-tested favorites, such as the Technology Integration Matrix, my good old OPTIC observation tool, and some of the Formative Assessment Tools from the New Teacher Center.  Over the past several years, some of these frameworks have come in handy time and time again.  They give me a guideline for thinking and keeping my focus.

2. What did I intend to be the impact of my resources on others' learning? I especially like the Formative Assessment tools, such as the Meeting Log/Collaborative Log when I'm working with individual teachers over any extended period of time.  It's a great way to keep the focus and work on our goals, and a way to keep positive steps moving forward, while acknowledging and dealing with challenges that arise (clearly supported with help), and also taking a moment to celebrate the success of the progress the teacher has made.  I hope that others will use these as discussion threads when doing similar work.

3. What actual impact could I discern? Overall, I think some of my negativity about the long term effects of my efforts came through, as others expressed similar concerns with the idea that once the mentee is no longer supported on a regular basis the forward momentum may come to a slowdown or a complete halt.  One colleague took this a step further, proposing ideas for how to encourage teachers to become tech mentors for each other. In my district we do not have technology coaches, and are not likely to get one any time soon, so I think this might be a good idea to pursue.  However, she is also correct in stating that without the support of leadership for something like this, teachers would not be very motivated to add the unofficial title and duties of mentor to an already busy load of work if there was no support for such work from leadership.

4. What will I do differently next week? I need to get my head around this project in terms of how I want to frame it for research.  Reviewing my data has taken me a lot of different directions in terms of what I've learned about mentoring, technology, teacher motivation, professional development, etc. I want to find a way to prioritize my learning from this and start thinking about it from one specific purpose. Also, my final interview with my mentee is this week, so I'm sure that will add to my thinking about this.

5. What resources did others share that made a difference to my learning? Probably one of the most important things I saw was that several others in the class were using reflective logs with their mentees.  This is such a great idea (wish I'd thought of it!), as reflection is such an important aspect in our practice anyway, and writing down your thoughts about a process of learning as you experience it can be really valuable.  Being able to look back on these logs could open up so many valuable discussions - ones that would be difficult in a twice-monthly meeting where the teacher is being asked to recall all that has happened in the previous two weeks.  I'm not sure it's a practical thing to ask all the time, but when mentoring in a process that is so new to some teachers, like technology integration, it's useful to ask them to think reflectively about their practice.  I'll definitely be incorporate reflective logs in some of my future endeavors in this area - specifically technology integration!

Week 12: What are you finding as you analyze the data related to your Mentor Project?

The data I have been collecting throughout my project has taken 3 forms:
1. Meeting logs - each time I meet with my mentee, I log a 4 point discussion with her.  First, we talk about what has been working in her classroom based on the goals she has set for edtech.  This is the time we note and celebrate any successes she feels she is having.  Then we focus specifically on challenges she is having as she works toward her goals.  This could have to do with equipment issues, her own personal understandings or skills, classroom management issues, scheduling issues - anything that she feels is creating barriers to meeting her goals. After this we talk about building on the success and overcoming the challenges - she and I brainstorm ideas about some things she can do specifically to overcome a barrier, and agree that she will work specifically on these steps. Then I add a short list of things that I might also do to help her overcome these challenges.  This may mean giving her some resources, making some suggestions, modeling a lesson, or any number of things.

2. Classroom observations.  I have observed tech-specific lessons in my mentee's classroom 2 times, and once while she was in my lab teaching a lesson to her students.  During these times, we agreed that the data I would collect would have to do specifically with classroom management issues related to equipment and time, as well as her instruction to the students.

3. Interview. At the beginning of this project I sat down with my mentee for a pre-project interview.  The questions were centered around her comfort level with technology in the classroom, and her ideas about classroom management with technology (since that aspect was her biggest concern).  I intend to have a similar interview with her again soon - the post-project interview.  The questions will be mostly the same.

Background:

My mentee is a primary/early elementary teacher at my school.  I have known her for many years, and we have a good, friendly, and respectful working relationship with each other.  Her classroom has an iPad cart, which she has had for 2 years.  So far, the cart has mostly been used for free time activities or rewards.  When she approached me this year about building her class blog, I suggested she also think about making a little time to try some other things as well, with my help, and she agreed.

At the outset, my mentee expressed interest in making technology more a part of her classroom, although she only had some general ideas about how to do this.  Her biggest concerns were time, and what she perceived to be her limited skills.  She knew she wanted to create and maintain a blog for her class to build communications and connections with home, as well as to spotlight things that her students were doing.  Beyond that she was not exactly sure where or how to begin.  I see her students once a week for 30 minutes during their technology time in my classroom.  I have been doing things with the students such as building keyboard familiarity, teaching them the vocabulary of technology (desktop, dock, applications, browsers, word processing, etc), teaching them to open browsers and find a URL, and how to open applications such as Pages and PhotoBooth and work within them. Sometimes my mentee stays during this period to observe or talk with me (this is their "specials" period, which is meant to be a planning period for her).

Data Analysis:

Meeting Logs:
Over the course of the project, my mentee and I have been able to meet on 5 different occasions for the purpose of discussion of her goals and assessing her progress by completing the meeting logs. Her first goal, getting a class blog up and running, took a couple of weeks, but she eventually got it the way she liked it and found maintenance to be easy.  For her general integration goal, we had to talk a bit before we landed on an idea she liked - incorporating the iPads into her "centers" rotation during reading time.  Initially her idea was to have the students play with reading, grammar, and spelling apps during this time.  I suggested a few, and she quickly found that apps alone are only good for so long, but most are limited.  Students will become bored with them.  This then has a ripple effect on what she was most worried about in the process - classroom management of technology integration.  The meeting logs show that over the course of our mentor/mentee relationship, she was able to move to a more useful app - iTalk - which gave her and students valuable feedback about reading fluency.  Some of her anxieties about management were allayed by the implementation of checklists for students.  Overall, the meeting logs kept the goals of the project focused, and work was centered around a very specific goal and the issues that arose around that goal.

Observations:
For my classroom observations, I used the OPTIC tool.  I have used this in tech integration-related research before, and found it to be a good general tool for classroom observation of effective technology integration.  Two of the observations took place in the mentee's classroom during language arts center time, when she had planned to utilize the iPads.  One of the observations took place in my classroom, as the teacher led the students through a lesson about editing in word processing.

At the time of my first observation, the teacher had recently added the iPads to the language arts center rotation, and was offering the students a choice of 3 apps to use during this time - Sentence Builder, Question Builder, and Story Builder.  I had recommended these three apps in particular to start with because they could be easily differentiated based on level of the student, and it was easy to get data from them.  The day I observed it was only the students' second day using these apps in the rotation, and their small groups of 4 spent 15 minutes in that part of the rotation with the iPads.  Students were still using the apps improperly, in that they were switching around between them a lot based on what their friends were using.  This was making it difficult if not impossible to collect any useful data from the app.  Also, students would often get confused in setting the levels.  The result of this was numerous interruptions for the teacher while she was trying to work one on one with other students during this time.

For the second observation, the previously mentioned apps were still in use, with somewhat better results.  She had taken time to re-teach how the apps should be used. Eventually though, she reported the students quickly became bored with the apps and interruptions would start again. She and I had discussed this, and so she had also added the iTalk app, and the expectation that the students would spend at least 5 minutes of their center rotation reading and recording a previously assigned piece, then emailing it to their teacher.  The teacher had set up 2 study carrels in the corner for this purpose, and during one rotation (4-5 students per rotation), 2 students used this app in the study carrels.  During the second rotation 3 students used it.  Interruption of the teacher from this group was minimal - only 4 interruptions during a 20 minute period, compared to 15 interruptions during my previous observation.

For the third observation, the teacher agreed to teach a whole class lesson on editing tools within pages to her students while they were in my class (computer lab).  She wanted to have some experience doing whole group instruction in technology with me there, before she attempted this in her own classroom.

Interview:
Before this process began, my mentee and I sat down for a short pre-project interview.  I wanted to get an idea of her goals for the project, and also assess where she was (or felt she was) in her own level of readiness.  The questions were as follows:
1. What are your goals for this year in your classroom with technology?
2. How would you describe yourself as a "user" of technology?
3. What kinds of things do you think you need to learn in order to accomplish your goals?
4. How do you think technology can help your students learn?
5. How do you think technology can help you learn about your students?

During our initial interview, she made her goals clear (as indicated in our meeting logs), that she wanted to build and maintain a class blog, and work technology "meaningfully" into her language arts centers. As a "user" of technology, she seemed to have constructed two different selves to answer this question - herself as a personal consumer and user, and herself as a user of technology in her professional life.  She kept using the phrase "at home" to refer to the differences in how she used and felt about technology.  When "at home" she felt quite capable. She follows many blogs, subscribes to video channels, and vigorously bookmarks items of interest (in her browser).  However, at school, when using technology with students she felt very tentative and unsure, and kept returning to the idea of, "They are so much better at this stuff than I am."  In order to accomplish her goals, she believed that there was a literal laundry list of apps that she would have to learn to use and review, and she worried she would not have the time for this.  She was also worried about classroom management issues that could potentially arise during this time, as it was something new, and she really didn't have time to deal with hit.  Throughout her comments, she maintained that she firmly believed that there was a lot that students could learn by using the computers/iPads.  She connected this to herself, observing that she used technology a lot each day, and students would need to know how to do that.

I plan to conduct our final interview (same questions) early next week.

Overall, I have found that although on the surface, this doesn't look like much in the way of technology integration, if you look at the progress of the discussion over the course of the meeting logs, there were great strides forward in her confidence and her way of thinking about integration.  Keeping the running conversation focused on her goals and strategies to overcome barriers had the effect of greatly increasing her confidence in the process.  I believe that in the future, it is the type of thinking she will use in her approach to more integration.  It involves setting a single goal, taking steps to get started, focusing on challenges that crop up around that specific goal, and taking steps to fix them.  Part of these small successes was due to the fact that she believed that what the students were doing with the technology was worthwhile.  She believed that the data she collected from their work on the apps, and the data and feedback discussions she collected from their iTalk recordings really were great steps in improving fluency and writing. She believed that this technology component in the rotation offered the students something she would not otherwise be able to give them. In this environment, the changes were forcing her and her students to learn differently.

Philosophy of Adaptation

My motto for 21st century learners:
Helping children today imagine their tomorrow, and to shape the world in which they will live. 

This is a distilled version of what is more likely a vision statement: 
All children should be given the opportunity to shape their learning by communicating, creating, collaborating, thinking critically, and learning their about their place in the world as a global citizen.  These are the skills and mindsets that will prepare our children to follow their passions, and make their lives and the lives of others better in the 21st century, no matter where they are located.

This motto was influenced my my own experience and constructivist views of education and how children learn best, as well as many specific readings.  Some of the most influential readings (recently) include:

My own strategies for adapting to change really started taking shape at about the same time that I started becoming interested in educational technology.  The more I read, and the more I learned, the more I was motivated to experiment and try things in my own classroom.  Many of these new ideas were not just about technology, they were about a way of looking at teaching and learning that really solidified what my own opinions and gut feelings were, but it gave them structure and a path to move forward on. Until I opened this new door, I had felt frustrated, like my practice was stagnating.  I had a lot of ideas about education that I knew were good, but had run dry on ways to create and express these through my instruction.  The early days of building my PLN not only gave me a flood if ideas, it also opened up a collaborative world that I had been lacking.  As I learned, experimented, and taught, I found it became a never-ending spiral that continually motivated me. I'd learn something, try it out, reflect, give feedback to my PLN, deepen my thinking about the process, realize I was onto something good, and take another step. Everything I did, even the things that didn't work out so well, confirmed that overall, I was on the right path.  I was changing the way I taught.  This opened up the flood gates - it changed the way my students learned, it changed how I perceived them, it made me raise my standards for them constantly, and greatly broadened my perspectives on meaningful learning.

The great thing about this class is that it has created an opportunity for me to really focus and reflect on that aspect - change - in my own career.  Along the way, it's also allowed me the chance to have these discussions with others who are in the midst of it, or who are just beginning this journey.

How do I help my students with the concept of change? I model it for them every day. Whenever we are learning something new, I'll often thrown in a couple of new tools for them to try out that they may be unfamiliar with.  I give them a brief overview of these, with a little, "just try them out and see if you like them or can use them," encouragement.  My students trust me enough now to know that I'll have a lot of patience with a trial run, especially if it's something they think has promise - I'll respect that and give them a little extra time to learn it and work out the kinks.  They also know that when I say this there are no guarantees.  The program may not be what they need, it may be glitchy, or they may love it and it disappears next month.  This is ok, because they also know that there are probably many other, similar tools that will do the same thing.  As I keep saying, "The technology is not the thing," (maybe this should be my motto!).  One piece of software or app is not going to make or break anything - there are lots of ways of going about getting things accomplished. I try to always instill that attitude in my students, and the best way I do this is by modeling this behavior myself.  Sometimes things don't work - what can you do? Don't cry over spilt milk or end the project, simply look for something that does work. Problems like tech not working are trivial.  It doesn't change the fact that things need to get done.

Another way I feel I can help my students is by watching them, listening to them, and learning from them.  Really paying attention to how they solve problems is very revealing.  It's particularly revealing if you've given them a task that they want to do in the first place.  If they are all committed to that task because it's meaningful, really interesting, or just fun, then they are automatically committed to solving any problems that crop up along the way - they want to see it through, so stopping work is simply not an option that's even discussed. I think that this is key in teaching our kids the habits of mind they'll need to adapt to change.  We need to give them meaningful tasks and interesting problems.  If we do this, and also set our own minds to being flexible in allowing them to attack and solve them, we'll have the benefit of seeing them do some pretty incredible things to reach their goal. Having the opportunities to do this on a regular basis changes the habits of mind of our kids.  They begin to feel as though they are in charge of their learning, and they take that responsibility seriously. They are not doing this for the grade, but because they really want to know - it's a worthwhile challenge to them. Thinking and operating this way naturally makes anyone, us and our students, more readily adapt to changes.  Students know that if the goal is a worthwhile and interesting pursuit, they will have to deal with obstacles that come up along the way.

Planning for teaching this way is not always easy - we often have to do a lot of learning ourselves, and we also have to let go of some of the notions we have (get ready for some heresy) about the importance of sticking to that curriculum. On the up side, by doing this, we are often taking our students far beyond the curriculum.

Week 10 Reflection

1. What resources did I share this week? I shared my gamer interviews, as well as some pretty good resources on perspectives in gaming in education - including one more from one of my favorites, Seymour Papert.  I also shared plenty of (probably unsolicited) opinions of my own about games thinking, student-driven curriculum, collaboration, and leadership. I guess I was feeling more opinionated than usual this week.

2. What did I intend to be the impact of my resources on others' learning? I hoped to get across the idea that not all games are created equal.  Carse's thinking on this in his book Finite and Infinite Games really nails the difference.  Even as sophisticated and engaging as most games are today, I really don't think all produce the same levels of thinking that we know are most beneficial in real life.  It's the infinite games, those that allow the user to create their own environments and challenges, and to work with groups to enrich the process that are really the gems in the bunch. I hope I communicated my thoughts on that.

3. What actual impact could I discern? I think people are interested in the Minecraft phenomenon - expect to see lots of Minecraft sessions at ASTE this year! I think teachers specifically are interested in how this could potentially impact education, because there is definitely something worthwhile going on there.  The comments on my post all echoed this idea.

4. What will I do differently next week? Since I have had a little more time this weekend (other class finished, class I'm teaching finished, son gone on basketball trip), I took more time to respond to comments on my own blog - something I'm not always good about.  I know that engaging in a conversation that I started is really beneficial, and it feels good to get back into those discussions.  I'm definitely going to continue to do that, not only on my own blog, but others' as well - so look out everyone - I'm feelin' chatty!

5. What resources did others share that made a difference to my learning? Amber shared a good article about a guy who explained some of the leadership skills he got from playing games (pointing out that we may not only be talking about computer games here - good to remember). That was an interesting perspective because he talked about personal skills, like prioritizing and focusing, but those translate into good leadership skills as well. Leadership is about more than the ability to simply motivate a group.  Also, everyone's interviews with gamers were interesting too - I saw some similarities with my own interviews, and also some responses that made me think about other ways my students game.  Barbra got me to thinking about how gaming skills translate.  I could think of some definite ways, but also that there is a difference between the types of games and the skills they teach - they don't all translate into valuable thinking skills outside of the game environment.  Infinite games seem to have a higher degree of transferable skills than finite ones do.

Week 10: What Leadership Lessons Can We Take from Gamers ?

Interview Questions:
1. Which kinds of games do you prefer, single player or multiplayer?
2. Which game do you play more than any others, and why?
3. How do you find people to play with in this game?
4. What qualities do you look for in others you play this game with?
5. How do you make decisions about game play with others you are online with?

My interviewees this week were my son, a 7th grader, and one of my students, a sophomore.  My son has been gaming since he was about 9 years old - he got his X-Box when he was 10.  He spends a couple of hours a day gaming, and more on weekends.  He owns a few games, but as they are expensive, and he tires of them quickly, we subscribe to a service called GameFly. He can rent games and return them when he is done - which is good because sometimes "done" can happen in 15 minutes! It's far more economical than buying. So games come and go, but occasionally he lands on a favorite that he just never wants to return - GameFly lets you buy those at a reduced price.  When he first began gaming, he really liked racing games, like motocross, and car racing. Over the past couple of years, he moved on to games like Call of Duty and Modern Warfare, which were a big deal at first but now are not played often.  What we have learned is that most of the time his interest in a particular game has to do with how the "community" likes the game - thus his long flings with Call of Duty and Modern Warfare - everyone was playing them.  However, one game has taken top spot over the past year and a half, and although other games are played occasionally, this one still has the podium - yes, it's Minecraft.  So when I posed my interview questions to him, naturally we were talking about this particular game.

For him, multiplayer is definitely a preference.  I could speculate and say it's because he's homeschooled and it's the social aspect that he loves, but plenty of kids in school with very active social lives love multiplayer as well.  At age 13 he's not too reflective about these kinds of things, and tells me that he simply likes multiplayer because it's more fun to play with others.  He always plays Minecraft with the same core group of 3-5 kids, which includes a couple of cousins, and a couple of boys from his basketball team.  There is one cousin he no longer plays with because they would get into such terrible fights that it would cross over into "real life".  (We finally had to step in and tell them to stay off of each other's Minecraft servers). He says reason he plays with this particular group of boys is because they like to do the same types of things, like creating new buildings or towns, or discovering new ways to mine. In other words, they tend to be looking for the same types of challenges. When I asked him how the group made decisions, he didn't quite understand what I meant.  I don't think that they really think of their play in this more grown up way, as in having a leader, making decisions, etc. They just "do".  I clarified by asking him if any of the things they did were his idea - and he answered that of course, they were all his ideas!  Further questioning finally got to the heart of it - he really can't pinpoint with whom ideas originate, but what he meant was that he always contributes plenty of ideas - so does everyone.  He says that when he as a good idea he says it but then starts to do it as he's talking about it.  If he does this, most of the time, others join in.  However, he said that if he takes to long just talking about an idea, it usually doesn't get done, and the others move on to somethings else.  My guess is that the talking interrupts the flow, and in the midst of play, no one wants to stop.  Plus, in a three-dimensional environment, nothing explains better than showing.

My other interviewee is a sophomore in high school, and has been a student of mine since he was in 6th grade.  He has always enjoyed working with technology, has learned to program, and is currently in the process of building a computer. So what does this sophisticated techie like to play best? Minecraft again - the very same game my own much younger son loves. There must be something to this! Although I have not played Minecraft myself, I have watched it played, and read quite a bit about it, and I can see why it would appeal to a kid like him.  He says he doesn't always prefer multiplayer games, that it's about 50/50, but also said that he really hasn't played much else besides Minecraft for the past year.  There is a crowd of kids from school who he regularly plays with, in small groups of 2 or 3, or sometimes as many as five. He mainly plays with this group because, according to him, they all share the same commitment to the game. "It's not a game that you can just play a little bit then stop. If you start something you have to be committed to finishing it." I ask him how long it takes to "finish", just to clarify. He shrugs his shoulders and says one never knows, it could take days, weeks or months. The point is, the group has to be committed to seeing it through.  I ask if he gets this commitment up front.  He says no, but if they're into it, and they love it, they'll stick with it, and that's why he plays with this particular group, because they all love it. When I asked him about leadership in his group, he admitted that often he took the lead, although he couldn't say exactly why.  He's not a bossy kid - very level-headed and friendly, and his friends recognize and respect his abilities and knowledge about technology. So I suspect that gives him a bit of elevated status as unofficial leader for them. I asked him if they came up with ideas as well, and he said of course.  Then he said something that really surprised me - he said that people would explain an idea by just doing it - almost exactly the same thing my own son had told me.  This confirms my ideas about flow being such an important aspect of the dynamics of this kind of game play.

What both my son and my student explained to me about Minecraft confirm what Thomas and Seely Brown explain about groups of players having the same tacit understandings from prolonged periods of indwelling in their gaming worlds.  They are inhabiting the same space, with the same challenges and same goals, and working to adapt to the changes along the way.  This kind of "knowing" that they share helps to create the synergy between the players that keeps the game so exciting and engaging.  In their book on game design, Salen and Zimmerman echo this idea when talking about meaningful play. "Meaningful play engages several aspects of a game simultaneously, giving rise to layers of meaning that accumulate and shape player experience." (Salen, Zimmerman, 2004).

Games like Minecraft and World of Warcraft have become such a phenomenon because they are what James P. Carse characterized as "infinite games" in his book, Finite and Infinite Games.  He says, "A finite game is played for the purpose of winning, and an infinite game is played for the purpose of continuing to play. The rules of a finite game may not change; the rules of an infinite game must...The finite game player aims to win eternal life; the infinite player aims for eternal birth."  This speaks to the ability of a player in Minecraft to create their own worlds, and continually open up a series of never-ending challenges. You don't "win a level" in Minecraft, you master your own challenges. The beauty of it is, the challenges are richer, more complex, and more engaging when more players are involved.

I'll go back to Papert again this week, because I'm always so impressed when I read his stuff from the 80's and 90's. In an article he wrote for Game Developer Magazine called "Does Easy Do It? Children, Games, and Learning", Papert is writing in a time of exploding games, most of which are still single-player, and leveled. Still, he extols the benefits of these types of games, and the critical thinking and learning skills these encourage in players.  However, he keeps going back to game design and game creation - asking the "what if" questions about kids creating their own games.  He says that type of an experience would be even more enriching, as they would be able to design their own play.  I wonder if he imagined a place in the not too distant future where engaging play and game design and creation would merge - into games like Minecraft and World of Warcraft.

What leadership lessons can we take away? It's easy to see how effective a group can be if they are engaged, passionate, and have synergy - so what conditions can a leader control to create that for a group? I think looking at it from that perspective, can help us to think about what leaders need to do to support a group in many ways to help them perform at their peak.

What lessons can gaming teach us for the classroom? The lessons are very much the same - as the instructional leaders in the room, we want our students to be engaged, passionate, and have synergy - we know that groups who have this are motivated to learn, to overcome challenges, and are more likely to employ innovative solutions to problems - so how can we support them? Thinking about how we design the problems/tasks for them is a big part of it. I think it's a whole new way of looking at curriculum so that it's really powered - "designed" -by the students.

Week 9 Reflection

1. What resources or ideas did I share this week? Mostly I just shared my frustrations, but I'm glad anytime I get an opportunity to share Seymour Papert's view of the world.  The things he was writing in the 80's and 90's could have been written today, so imagine the frustrations he felt then! But he was spot-on in everything he imagined and predicted about schooling, technology, teaching, and how kids learn. By sharing the frustrations I have with my own district, I also hope this makes others realize that with the New Evaluation System, even though the test scores only comprise a part of it, and the rest is pretty good stuff, the focus will be on those scores, because teachers feel like the rest of it is within their control.

2. What did I intend to be the impact of my resources on others' learning? Hoping people will just keep remembering that even though we have politicians who are trying to keep education locked firmly in the 1800's, there are alternatives, there are things we can do, and there are better ways.  We don't have to teach to that test, we can teach "around" it.  I firmly believe that the byproduct will be that oh, by the way, they happened to do well on the test too.  That point of view is going to be a hard sell in this environment they have created.

3. What actual impact could I discern?  Unfortunately, it seems many teachers share the same worries as I do about what will be the ripple effect here. In our state, this year and next are going to bring some shifts, but I fear not the right ones, as the student score portion of the evaluation system will initially drive things, at least until some way can be put in place that allays peoples' fears.

4. What will I do differently next week? Well, I'll try not to be such a negative Nancy and bearer of doom and gloom! What we really need to be looking for right now is a way "around" this, (just like teaching around the tests). I really believe that we need to work hard at coming up with a model of how good portfolio assessment can make up a significant part of that little blue box.  Yes, test scores have to be there, but I really think that if we include our own better measures of student achievement (dreaded words), that we can minimize the impact of that particular factor, and thus minimize text anxiety (on the part of teachers).

5. What resources did others share that made a difference to my learning? Well I don't know if it made me feel any better, but @akteacherlead had a really fantastic post that included other barriers that we really need to be aware of and also working with.  Although test scores are my primary concern right now, we have other fires that we need to be working on as well so that we all can move forward.

Week 9: What are the challenges in shifting content from "what" to "where" and "how"?

Based on the inservice I just had today, this question has some immediate frustrations for me.  The teachers were finally given a full introduction to the state's new Teacher Evaluation System. Naturally this engendered a lot of anxiety, especially the aspect of the evaluation that has to do with test scores.  Everyone was right on board for all of the other components of the evaluation, but when that innocuous little blue box at the bottom labeled "student learning standard" entered the conversation, all sense of logic and level-headedness left the room.  Naturally teachers are worried that a good portion of their evaluation as a professional may be determined by factors they feel are far beyond their control - absenteeism, special ed, poor test-taking skills - any number of things that we know can have an adverse affect on test scores now suddenly take center stage. These kinds of discussions make me anxious, for the same reasons, but also because in the larger picture, my biggest worry is that teachers will be operating in an atmosphere of fear.  This will motivate many teachers to do one thing - narrow their teaching to the test.  I can't fault this line of thinking - if you feel your job, your way of earning a living, and your sense of self as a professional in your field depends on this, it's easy to see how common sense might fly right out the window.

In our reasonable, logical minds, we know these tests are such a very narrow measure of what students know. As Thomas and Seely Brown point out, these tests are great at measuring the "what" of content.  Multiple choice and short answer are the easiest way to measure certain kinds of learning - mainly "what". Although I could point to a lot of things that ordinarily would make shifting the content from "what" to "where" and "how" a challenge, this is by far the biggest barrier, and now policy is making this shift more difficult than ever.

By way of contrast, author and blogger Will Richardson recently posted about a new school he visited called the Workshop School. As he points out, a major difference here is that the norms of the school are not created by administration - they are created by the learners - the staff and students.  The school is project based, and encourages students to pursue and explore areas of personal interest.  Richardson says of the school, "the vision is really clear: learning is about experience and doing and creating real, meaningful stuff together as a community." A far cry from most schools today, which look strangely like the schools of yesterday. Schools like this believe that inquiry-based learning that encourages critical thinking and creativity involves students tackling real-world issues and controversies, solving problems and creating solutions, and participating in the public creation and improvement of ideas and knowledge. Doesn't it follow that if students are engaged in these types of activities that they can probably handle a ridiculous multiple choice test without us demeaning their intelligence by focusing so narrowly on the "what's"?

An article that is a little old, but still inspiring to read, is one of Seymour Papert's from 1993.  In it, he imagines a "knowledge machine" as a metaphor for events close enough in the future that they should demand serious consideration now.  He is referring (in 1993) to the idea that technology will expand our knowledge and ability to explore in ways that will completely change our idea of what it is to learn and know. His argument is that pure focus on the 3 R's as a cornerstone for learning is wrong-headed.  He doesn't disagree that kids need these, but only that they are over-emphasized and given too much importance at the expense of other ways of learning and knowing.  He argues that, "The possibility of freely exploring worlds of knowledge calls into question the very idea of an administered curriculum." Most importantly, he points out what is now obvious, "A child who has grown up with the freedom to explore with such machines (metaphorical knowledge machine) will not sit quietly through the standard curriculum dished out in most schools today. Already, children are made increasingly restive by the contrast between the slowness of School and the more exciting pace they experience [outside of school]."

Papert wrote this 20 years ago, and we see it play out every day in classrooms everywhere. Yet we continue to put systems into place that make teachers believe they need to continue to operate this way. At this point it's counter-intuitive to almost everything we now know about how children learn.

As I read back over this post I can tell it's been one of those days!

*Note that in spite of my ranting, I am not against tests per se, but I am against high stakes tests that are used to make bad decisions that have far reaching, mostly negative, consequences for students and teachers. I don't think any of us went into this profession so that we could teach kids how to take multiple choice tests.

Week 8: Reflection

1. What resources/ideas did I share this week? One of the things I always find the most effective to share with others is my own personal experiences with something.  It's not always the case that we are discussing something where I feel an experience I have had would directly contribute to making a point or supporting a point of view, but when it does, it seems that others appreciate what I have to share.  I know this is the case with me as well - when I am learning about something new, and someone can tell me a story about it with a personal experience that really paints a vivid picture in my mind about how that can look in a classroom, that really stays with me.

2. What did I intend to be the impact of my resources on others' learning? I had hoped that by sharing my personal experience about how I brought the process of inquiry into my own classroom, and the impact it had, that they would have a better idea about how this kind of learning can really look in action.  It seems that often when discussing inquiry learning, people still take away the idea that we the teachers are posing the questions and it is the students who have to find answers to them.  Real inquiry means the students are asking the questions that guide their own learning.

3. What actual impact could I discern? It seems like people responded to this in my comments, expressing interest and enthusiasm that this is working well even with older students who are not necessarily used to it.

4. What will I do differently next week? Of course, I'd like to be able to say I have the perfect classroom experience story to fit every situation.  Sharing these not only can help others, but it helps me to reflect on what I am doing, and then question it to see if I can take it further.  However, I don't always have a good story, and often our topics of discussion are things I have only passing or very mundane experiences with - nothing particularly insightful or visionary! But what I want to do more of is thinking about how it could look if I really took the initiative to apply it.

5. What resources did others share that made a difference to my learning? Barbra always gets me to thinking about what we really want from good leadership, and this week her post made me realize that even our leaders are not always empowered to feel like true visionaries - to a certain extent, many are made to feel their destinies, and those of their teachers and students, are chained to test scores, and that's unfortunate. Andrea shared a couple of resources I really liked.  One was 11 ways to make an inquiry-based classroom, and the other was a Pinterest board on math inquiry learning. Although I am the first to admit I am often scared by math, I really enjoy reading blogs by math teachers who have a passion for teaching math, and are willing to do innovative things - I'm always interested in her posts.  Many of the ideas on the math Pinterest board were simple - I think she was looking for bigger ideas - but they could be applied to lots of things.  I appreciate easy to use, flexible resources like that.

Week 8:What are the importance of inquiry and questioning in your discipline? How do/can you nurture student passion in your classroom?

I like how Thomas and Seely Brown back up in these two chapters and lay the foundation for the differences between explicit knowledge and tacit knowledge, then tie these together with new ways of learning.  The Polanyi quote, "We know more than we can tell," is an apt way to phrase this difference.

There was one point where they were discussing the story about Thomas teaching the college honors seminar, and having the problem that his students could not express what they were passionate about, and had never been asked about this.  I see this often myself at the middle and high school level - kids are unable to express an idea about something they really care about.  Sometimes I will get tentative stabs at this, such as "I like dogs," but it's clearly something we do not spend enough time empowering kids with from a young age.  I think if we did, it might still be unnameable, but it would also be such an obvious part of their personality that we would be able to guess it easily. The point is, getting older students to tap into this as a source of learning and inquiry is difficult - they are out of practice, and since they have not been asked before, they no longer associate that passion in any way with school or academics.

In a story last year about Tony Wagner, author of The Global Achievement Gap, they quote him as saying, "The culture of schooling as we know it is radically at odds with the culture of learning that produces innovators." Seely Brown and Thomas also bring up this contradiction of culture of schooling vs. culture of learning.  It's unfortunate, but almost any educator can tell you exactly what that statement means.  We can tell you the kinds of environments where we know kids are excited, enthusiastic, and open to inquiry and discovery - it happens naturally for young children almost anytime they are given a little freedom to explore, experiment, and create.  However, the structures we set up in school (many ingrained in us from preservice texts, and even before (anticipatory set anyone?), often have schools doing things that take away those very opportunities.

A couple of years ago, I started to simply turn my social studies lessons upside down so we could practice inquiry. My 8th graders had not had much practice.  At the beginning of a lesson, I'd show them something - usually a picture, a piece of art, an article, a short video, an illustrated map - something.  I'd tell them what it was, as in naming it, and maybe giving it a little context, and then they had 5 minutes to write down all of the questions they had about it.  Initially, this was a difficult exercise for them - they would not have many questions.  When we talked about some of their questions, sometimes another student would shout an answer, even though none was obvious.  There was one boy who I knew was very sharp, but routinely would only write down about 3 questions.  After the 3rd time we did it, I asked him why he had so few questions in 5 minutes.  He said he didn't want to write down very many because he was just waiting for me to assign an essay paper on all of them if he had a bunch!  What an eye opener for me!  Apparently, without any ill-intent to squash inquiry, I had done just that!

I've continued to use this process ever since, and I have to say, by the end of the year - even mid-year - my students are extremely good at asking questions.  They also learn to categorize questions.  Level one questions are those to which it will be relatively easy to find an answer - a couple of Google searches. Level 2 questions are a little more complex - there is an answer, but it will require some further research in order to get more context and bring together a variety of sources.  Level 3 questions don't lend themselves to just one answer, or to easy answers.  They are questions that often people have opinions about, rather than answers.

By learning to get comfortable with questioning, and then with analyzing their inquiry, this makes approaching their discovery process a lot easier to tackle.

Have I quit assigning essays? No! However, instead of saying at the beginning that everyone will write one, I now wait and see where their inquiry goes.  If they are culminating in something that really lends itself to an essay, I'll suggest it, and they very often can see the sense in presenting their findings this way by that stage. But I'm also open to other ideas for presenting. Although we are only two months into school, this year my 8th graders have already each written one significant essay, and some have written two.  That does not count the many blog posts and web pages they have written.  I feel like the quality of writing I'm getting now is much better - but they are writing because it seems a natural next step in their process. Teaching this way has the added benefit of being much more interesting for me - it's common during an initial inquiry session that I get as much into the questioning and discussion as they do!

Week 7 Reflection

1. What resources/ideas did I share this week?  This week I used resources from the text, A New Culture of Learning, as well as a blog post by another educator regarding teachers who choose to join the collective or remain isolated.  I also shared an interesting article that was not education specific, but spoke to the idea that as a society, our participation in collectives is making us smarter, due to the increased amount of content we are producing, rather than simply consuming.

2. What did I intend to be the impact of my resources on others' learning?  By sharing these resources, and reflecting on my own participation in collectives, I hoped to show how impactful this participation can be - as it has on my own career.  Since I began this participation, I have been more motivated in my own career and learning than at any other time.  I am going in new directions that I could not have anticipated even five years ago, and would never have gone had I not done this.  The impact on me has been huge, and I wanted others to know how powerful this is.

3. What actual impact could I discern? Based on the comments I received, I think that many in this class are experiencing different phases of this same growth that I have over the past few years.  Not many are untouched by this.

4. What will I do differently next week?  I will continue to look for resources that expand my thinking, even as I reflect on my own learning.  It seems there is a lot of reflection going on out in the blogosphere and other places where people are summing up this shift in how we work, play, and learn. It verifies my own gut feelings about this shift, and also helps me to learn about new ways people are interacting online.

5. What resources did others share that made a difference in my learning? Jonathan shared a link to BSSD's open content curriculum, which I was really happy that he shared! They have been doing an interesting re-make of their curriculum over the past couple of years, and it is great to have it as a resource as we work through the same process. Ginger put up an excellent post, which made me think about some of the "forced" groupings we are often put into - people expect magic to happen just because we have been told to collaborate and we all presumably have the same goals, but these rarely elicit the kind of true innovative thinking that our chosen collectives do.  How can we get teachers to collaborate, and yet not force these kinds of situations upon them?

Week 7: What are your thoughts about “learning in the collective”?

I'm already incredibly biased on this point: I have had the benefit for learning from the collective for several years now - via my online PLC.  By finding, reading, and commenting on blogs of like-minded educators, as well as following a community of innovative educators on Twitter, my practice has been impacted in more ways than any other period in my career preceding that time.  Some people say one of the bad things about the internet is that it encourages people to limit their consumption of information to sources that back up what they already believe.  Although this is true to a certain extent, what is not noted in particular point of view is that many people are not only consuming - they are also contributing.  As members of the "collective" do this, it's inevitable that new thinking emerges. Of course I will follow "like-minded" educators, because I am interested in using the collective primarily for learning, not arguing.  Like-minded does not mean identical - obviously we all have our own experiences and untried ideas to bring to the table for discussion.  As a whole, these experiences and ideas are more than the experiences and ideas of one.

Why is it that we seem to learn so much more in the collective?  Obviously we are participating because we are passionate about the topic at hand - that's a given.  However, Thomas and Seely Brown offer another perspective when talking about collectives in general, as well as ones that may gather around a special interest forum or site.  "There are no tests or lectures. There is no public influencing of private minds.  Yet learning happens all the time. And because there is no targeted goal or learning objective, [the site] can be used and shaped in ways that meet the needs of the collective -," (Thomas, Seely Brown, 2012).

In a Wired article, "Why even the worst bloggers are making us smarter", author Clive Thompson says, "The fact that so many of us are writing - sharing our ideas, good and bad, for the world to see - has changed the way we think.  Just as we now live in public, so do we think in public. And that is accelerating the creation of new ideas and the advancement of global knowledge." He talks about how online networks perpetuate more writing by individuals, and as a result, we are now more producers of knowledge than the consumers of knowledge we were before the internet.

Hitting a little closer to home, educator/blogger George Couros recently posted, "Isolation is now a choice educators make." He promotes the idea that teacher blogging is not only a powerful reflective practice, but also a way to share ideas and improve by making our practice more transparent.

When I began participating in collectives, I also began blogging.  Through my network I was learning about a lot of new things, and coming up with a lot of ideas.  I'd try things out, and share what happened through my blog.  It helped me to be exactly as Couros suggests, more reflective - even within that activity I could generate some new questions and ideas for me to ponder.  I had a choice - I could sit on those questions and ideas I came up with alone, or they could lead me to new collectives where I could learn even more from others - the second option was easy, in part because as Thomson and Seely Brown mention, it was fun! It was a topic I was passionate about, I wanted to learn more about it, and I enjoyed it!

Now I wonder, why would teachers choose isolation? For younger teachers having grown up in the generation of the availability of the internet collective, taking part in it is something that comes naturally to them - though this does not necessarily mean they will choose to take part in one that helps them to learn more about their practice.  But for educators who did not grow up within this culture, have many made the shift?

Week 6 Reflections

1. What resources/ideas did I share this week? I think sharing my mentoring story was a good idea because it tied in with the idea of play, and I also knew it was something people could pull all kinds of ideas and insights from.  Based on the comments I received, that's pretty much what happened.  I was also eager to share the new Phantomation website, because MIT has come up with another winner, and it's classroom-ready!

2. What did I intend to be the impact of my resources on others' learning?  I wanted people to see that games like Phantomation are really great in a classroom.  The beauty of these types of games is that they are not teaching any specific skill, but through the complex problem solving required to play, the possibility for students to learn so many things (that we can't necessarily measure) is wide open.  This is the type of thinking (and collaboration) that our students need to practice often.  It's the side benefit of play that we value so much.

3. What actual impact could I discern?  From the comments I received, it seems like people thought it was a good activity for kids to spend time on.  One commenter wondered whether kids needed to master basic skills first before jumping into activities like this, or if they could master them through this kind of play.  I like when people have to really ponder that, and I think once you see it in action (like in my story), the evidence is pretty clear.

4. What will I do differently next week?  I know now that I really need to be making an impact with my mentee - activities like this show her that she does not need to know all of the answers herself in order for her kids to engage in this kind of learning. Can I do it again? Pressure is on!

5. What resources did others share that made a difference in my learning? Barbra keeps to her themes, and continues to find ways to show how important leadership and vision is in any kind of endeavor a school undertakes - even play. This week was no different, and I appreciate her drawing ideas back to that - it's a realistic approach. Heather's post reminded me of the importance of exploratory play across the curriculum.  I had been thinking about this week with technology in mind.  She reminded me that with math manipulatives, this is just as important.  Too often, we give kids manipulatives, and then tell them the right way to use them, without letting them explore patterns and relationships on their own. Andrea's post reminded me of the frustrations of looking for good educational gaming software.  I have been down that road so many times, and I've learned that sometimes when we are really looking hard for something, we may be narrowing our search too much - it's good to start thinking differently about what could solve your problem - and still use technology!

Week 6: What does play have to do with embracing change and how does this impact you as a professional?

According to A New Culture of Learning , "In a world of near-constant flux, play becomes a strategy for embracing change, rather than a way for growing out of it." (Thomas, Seely Brown, 2011).  We usually attribute the actions of "play" to young children, and also tend to assume that the need for constant play declines as we grow older.  My hunch is, it doesn't actually decline, but the demands on our time for other more pressing things simply crowd out the time we used to spend in play.

The key element of play - especially the unstructured play of children - is that they make up the parameters and rules as they go along.  They begin their play with some basic ideas in place, and as their imagination takes them along they adjust, adapt, and expand their play to accommodate their new ideas.  Interestingly enough, this is exactly the process that adults who we consider to be innovators use.

I think it's timely, and appropriate that organizations like the Lego Foundation are actively trying to help revamp education systems by incorporating play. Randa Grob-Zakhary, CEO of the Lego Foundation says, “A lot of work [in education] is focused on how can we better teach and more quickly teach reading and math--literacy and numeracy,” she says, speaking with Co.Exist at the United Nations' Global Compact summit in New York City last month. “There’s still a very big gap in defining how can we better equip our children with creative and critical thinking skills to equip them to face tomorrow’s challenges.”

And now, a little mentoring story...
Today was my day to spend 30 minutes with my mentee in her 3rd grade classroom.  I was modeling a lesson in using a new gaming software with her kids.  I explained to her first about the software.  It's called Phantomation, and it's a new project from the labs at MIT.  The object of the game is for the player to create animations using the built in animation software PlaySketch, which will scare the living beings through the mansion so that they are not captured by the lurking phantoms. PlaySketch is an actual professional animation software, which uses key framing and real time animation to possess objects.  MIT labs has worked it into the game.  The game is being used as research by MIT to determine if these new animation techniques make animation programming easier to learn.

There are only some very basic instructions included in the game - one or two sentences on an intro page. I sat the students at the computers and reviewed the term animation - most knew what it meant or was related to, and could give examples.  I then very briefly explained the object of the game, and that they would be making objects animate to help them.  I told them to play with it to figure it out, and that they could help each other, but gave no specific directions. For the first five minutes there was a lot of protesting and whining.  It was not immediately obvious what to do, so they wanted help right away.  I just encouraged them to keep playing around with it.  The heavy protests continued (my mentee was getting nervous!), but then around the 8 minute mark, one of the kids shouted, "I figured out how to make it move!".  Over the next few minutes there followed a series of similar discoveries.  By 15 minutes in there were small groups huddling up, moving to another screen, re-arranging into different groups, and a general flurry of activity.  Other than offering the occasional, "ask each other questions," or, "Why don't you ask *student* about that," I said nothing about the game, and gave no instructions. I stayed out of their flow of group conferencing.  At the end of the 30 minutes, all students had a basic command of the game, and more than half had moved up several levels.

The reason I chose this particular activity for my mentee to see, was because I wanted to show her the opportunities for constructivist, collaborative learning that technology offers. I wanted her to see how students become so quickly engaged in the problem solving, and how they collaborate without a thought when it comes to solving problems, and how in these situations, the group so naturally values the critical thinkers. The parameters of the game changed frequently, and in learning new ways to beat the game, they also quickly adapted to the changes in the game. Additionaly, I wanted her to see that her role in these things was best if it was minimal.  Kids learn too early to use their teacher as a crutch, and we happily oblige. If she remains a bystander, the learning is about them, and not about her. I also wanted her to see that some of the best options for this often look like play, and feel like play to kids. I think the message came through!

Funny story in contrasts - at the end of the 30 minute session the students had recess.  The same students, who only 5 minutes prior had been eagerly discussing solving problems with key frames and timers, quickly dissolved into an intense argument about who was the caboose in the line!

It was funny, but led me to question, which of the two situations I witnessed in that 5 minute time frame more accurately reflects what we think of when we hear the saying "kids will be kids"?  Which one should? In both scenarios, they were simply reacting as kids do within the expectations of the environment they were placed in. What kind of expectations and environments do we put them in for most of the day?

This gets to the heart of how change impacts me as a professional.  I want my students to be able to think in ways that help them adapt to and thrive with change.  If I want that, I have to be willing to be that way myself, and I have to be willing to let them experience those kinds of learning situations in the classroom.

Week 5: Reflections

1. What resources/ideas did I share this week?
I feel like I did a lot of rambling this week, but really that's just the equivalent of my think-aloud process.  Some people use talking for that, I do it in writing. I think the "Assessing ourselves to death" article was good for me, because it spurs me to think outside of the box.

What did I intend to be the impact of my resources on others' learning?
After re-reading that article this week, it helped me to synthesize the ideas in the reading.  I hope others got a chance to look it over and do the same.  I know we all like to go back and point out how this or that was different when we were kids. But this week what I was really dwelling on was how much it is the same - even with technology!

2. What actual impact could I discern?
Andrea commented that after reading my post she realized that she was still teaching in a way that re-emphasized the mechanistic view.  What bothers me is that this is something I still do as well - more often than I like.  I have made a concentrated effort during the past 5 years to move away from this, but find myself feeling corralled by the curriculum.  There are always ways around this - you can "teach to" the curriculum, but stills set up your learning environment from the point of inquiry and discovery.  However, at times I find myself looking at it and slipping back into traditional planning habits - ones that will inevitably lead to me being the one who decides the direction, focus, and goals of the learning that will take place. Thinking different takes practice and persistence!

3. What will I do differently next week?
I was actually satisfied and stimulated by the way the readings kind of guided my thinking this week.  Using the reading as a leaping off point to look for more resources that give me a wider, or even a counter perspective is a good for pushing me to dig deeper. I'll make a point of doing it again next week.

4. What resources did others share that made a difference to my learning?
Heather shared an article from November Learning that I enjoyed.  Although I don't read his stuff often, like Alfie Kohn and other educational "agitators", they are good for pushing you a little to make you really consider other sides of the discussion.

Week 5: How does the culture of your current teaching environment differ from the learning environment you experienced as a student?

As a student, the environment I learned in was what Thomas and Seely Brown refer to as a "teacher-based" environment. The bulk of my k-12 education took place in the 70's, and the practices in education at that time were, on the surface, largely unchanged from what they had always been. The teacher dispensed information, we regurgitated it back and were assessed on how accurately we were able to do that.  No brand new thinking was required or encouraged, but we were rewarded (through grades, advancement, and graduation) for expressing our thinking in the prescribed ways. Behavior also played a large role in our assessment.  If we also exhibited certain behaviors, such as turning in homework in a timely manner and maintaining regular attendance, that also figured prominently in our assessments.

As a teacher, I'd like to be able to say our environment has changed significantly, but unfortunately, I can't say that.  Overall, the environment for teaching and learning in my school operates in the same basic ways that it did 40 years ago.  What has changed visibly, is how that work is done. Teachers often use digital devices to project information, encourage students to do research on the internet instead of in the library, and homework is often completed in some form electronically. These changes have made the act of teaching far more efficient, and to some degree have done so for learning as well.

According to Thomas and Seely Brown, in a mechanistic perspective of education, "the goal is to learn as much as you can, as fast as you can. In this teaching-based approach, standardization is a reasonable way to do this, and testing is a reasonable way to measure the result. The processes that necessarily occur to reach the goal, therefore, are considered of little consequence in and of themselves. They are valued only for the results they provide."

There is a lot of lip service being given to new ways of teaching and learning, and the phrase "21st Century Education" is one we hear often.  Everyone seems to recognize the importance of this, but as we can clearly see, technology is being applied, not in ways that move environments to a learning-based approach, but in ways that re-emphasize, even amplify the mechanistic view. We want to harness new technologies, but often this is encouraged in ways that reiterate the importance of the teacher-led approach (IWB's, digital worksheets). We want to encourage inquiry, project-based learning, and innovation, but then impose testing of "standards" as a way to measure learning. Our actions (policies) counter what we preach.

I think the authors' second description of culture - one that grows organically - is obviously a more appropriate match with the ideals of a 21st century education.  Understanding how to use technology, not merely as a tool of efficiency, but also as a means to construct knowledge, will be the skill set most valued in shifting the culture and environment of schools.  Unfortunately, this is still at odds with our fervent quest to test that knowledge. We are faced with the problem of a tool that does not fit the task.

Week 4: Reflection

1. What resources/ideas did I share this week?
Two great resources I shared were two that I often refer back to when I look to resources/ideas for mentoring.  One was the Edutopia article about mentoring specifically for technology. It reminds me that this ads another layer of complexity - you are not just talking pedagogy, you are also talking about technological knowledge and skills, which is a whole other level for some people.  There are a lot of other "feelings" (for lack of a better way of putting it) that are added to the mix.  The other resource I included was the link to the New Teacher Center and their formative assessment system.  I really like how they have incorporated a sound teaching practice into the idea of mentoring others.  Their FAS stresses that the best mentoring situation is one in which you have a collaborative relationship with your mentee.

2. What did I intend to be the impact of my resources on others' learning?  Mentoring is far more than simply teaching someone else a skill.  It involves building a trusting relationship, finding a balance between what the mentee feels they want/need and directing them toward an alignment with their needs and best practices.  The resources I listed stress the importance of these considerations.

3. What actual impact could I discern? I described my mentoring plan and data collection based on the ideas included in these resources.  The commentors on my post both indicated that they appreciated this focused approach to mentoring.

4. What will I do differently next week?  I'll continue to try to keep an eye out for resources that are not only a source of inspiration and ideas for me, but that will also help others as they move into this mentoring project.

5. What resources did others share that made a difference to my learning? Jonathan shared an Education Week article that I found interesting because it really stressed the role of a quality and qualified mentor. What often happens in schools and districts is that veteran teachers are often assigned to new teachers and told they will mentor them - even though the veteran teachers may not want to do this or understand how mentoring works.  Needless to say, this situation is rarely helpful. Andrea also shared a site I had not heard of before but will definitely be visiting again - The iPad Professional Development Site.  Lots of good ideas there that, mentoring or not, I can use in my daily dealings and in PLC's with my colleagues regarding iPad issues and questions.

Week 4: Mentoring Plan

Introduction: I'll be mentoring a colleague in my building, who I'll call Carol.  She has been a teacher in the building for 8 years, and is interested in integrating technology into her classroom.  Over the past 5 years, she has participated in several workshops I have given about using blogs and wikis.  Although she had not set one up, the trainings gradually gave her an understanding of what she could do with these platforms.  This past summer, I taught a week-long class to teachers in our district as well as those in Delta-Greely about using Web 2.0 applications. Again, I trotted out my old standards, wikis and blogs (with the newer addition of websites).  This time, Carol stayed in an extra work session with me for the afternoon - she wanted to set up a blog, and she was sure that this time, she could do it. By the end of the day, she had set up a blog, and had listed several ideas for content she wanted to add to it immediately (gadgets), and who her audience would be (students and parents).  She visited me for several tutorials over the next 2 weeks, and by the end of the first week of school, she had her blog up and linked on the school site.  Publishing and maintaining this blog so far has given her a tremendous amount of confidence.

Timeline and Plan: I'll be working with Carol's students (elementary aged) once a week this year, and will also be spending time with Carol in some PLC sessions weekly to collaborate with her about ways she can take what I am teaching her kids each week, and integrate that into her content in her classroom so they can apply it there. This should give her added confidence, as she is not solely responsible for teaching the technology specifically.

Data Collection: Each week when I meet with Carol, I'll be using a collaboration form I have used with teachers I have mentored in the past.  It's called a Collaborative Assessment Log.  It is a form that aides our conversation with each other each week.  Usually I base these on the Alaska Teacher Standards, and the teacher selects one or two standards they would like to focus on as a basis for our conversations and ongoing plans.  However, for technology integration, I'll keep the teaching standards on hand, but will be basing our discussion on the ISTE Nets. Carol and I will begin by discussing those a little bit, then she'll decide which one she'd like to focus on in her classroom.  Then we'll go through the discussion log by talking about what she is doing right now that is working (in terms of instructional strategies, classroom management, etc). We will then turn the conversation to her current challenges - this will be focused on technology, and might include things she is worried about, such as classroom management, lack of technical expertise, lack of working equipment, etc. At this point we turn the conversation to what her next steps will be.  I can give her suggestions about how to work some of the tools her kids learn with me into her lesson plans, and she can agree to try one, or she might need to get some working equipment in place, such as a video camera.  To wrap up the conversation, I'll tell her a few things that I'll be able to do to support her - such as finding a piece of equipment, giving her a quick tutorial on something, or finding her a resource that will support her. The following week when we meet, we'll begin the conversation the same way, except when we talk about what's working, I'll have our Collaborative Assessment Log from the prior week. Our weekly conversations then become a cycle focused specifically on trying something new, reflecting on and celebrating success, addressing barriers, making plans, and making sure she has the support she needs. The Collaborative Assessment Logs will be my data.
